Behaviour Based Safety

Promoting safe behavior at work place is a critical part of the Occupational Health & Safety Management, because behavior turns system and procedures into reality. On their own, good system do not ensure successful health & safety management, as the level of success is determined by how organizations live their system.

Research statistics figures show that 96% of all workplace accidents caused by human behavior factor. Workers tend to have the nature of careless, negligent, often take a shortcut, does not adhere to standard operating procedures, etc. This all is Iceberg Paradigm, which often refers to unsafe behaviors.

Safe and unsafe behavior of a worker has never been analyzed, even never been reported at all. Even if there was a reporting system, it would likely lead to the atmosphere of blaming each other (blame culture).

In fact, according to the analysis of Iceberg Paradigm, there is no difference between unsafe behavior and accident. Both are “tangible” as “iceberg”. How can I make it smaller and melt?

There should be a commitment from all management and workers about the needs of Health & Safety atmosphere in the company to avoid sustainable iceberg, through a program called “Behavioral Based Safety”.
